Special Ed Preschool

Inclusive Preschool Special Education caters to children aged 3 to 5 with disabilities. The majority of these children participate in regular preschool classrooms alongside their typically developing peers. Various service alternatives, such as self-contained classes, talking-time sessions, home-hospital support, etc., are also available. These services are tailored to meet the specific goals outlined in each child's Individual Education Program (IEP).

The criteria for receiving Preschool Special Education Services are outlined by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), adhering to federal and state rules and regulations. Eligibility is determined through a comprehensive assessment process that evaluates various areas of development.

Areas of development evaluated include:

  • cognition

  • speech/language

  • social/behavior

  • gross/fine motor

  • self-help skills

  • vision/hearing

Qualified Special Education professionals conduct assessments, and a team of professionals, including parents, collaboratively creates an Individual Education Program (IEP) for eligible children. Services are then provided to children in diverse settings according to their IEP. The Early Childhood Programs at Davis School District assert that a classroom environment with typically developing peers is optimal for children with disabilities. In this inclusive preschool setting, children with disabilities can access the standard curriculum through adaptations and receive specialized instruction tailored to their individual needs.

If you are moving into the Davis School District and your child is on an IEP, you will need to come to our office between the hours of 8:30 am-3:00 pm.  Please bring a copy of your child's IEP, a contact name, phone number, and fax number of the last school attended, the child's birth certificate, and current immunization record.

I-15, go west on Antelope Dr. until you reach 300 west. Turn North onto 300 West continue about one mile until you reach the chain link fence gate and turn west. You will see Bldg. F-2 on the left.

Early Intervention

Davis Early Intervention is a comprehensive family-centered teaching program designed to offer timely assistance to infants and toddlers displaying notable developmental delays. Catering to eligible children aged from birth to 36 months, this program fosters collaboration between dedicated staff and families to facilitate the optimal growth and development of the children.

The program is staffed with a multidisciplinary team of professionals, including motor and speech specialists, developmental specialists, nurses, and social workers. These experts deliver Early Intervention services directly to the homes of families, childcare centers, or hospitals, ensuring accessibility and convenience.

By identifying and addressing developmental delays in their early stages, Davis Early Intervention aims to provide crucial support that can significantly impact the overall well-being and future prospects of the children involved. This proactive approach underscores the program's commitment to promoting the healthy development of infants and toddlers, setting a solid foundation for their ongoing growth and learning.

Evaluation is provided free of charge. In the event that a child meets the criteria for Early Intervention services, ongoing assessments and service coordination incur no fees. In accordance with the mandates of the Utah State Legislature, a monthly charge is applicable for direct services. The fee is determined based on a sliding scale.

Referrals

Once a referral is made, a member from an Intake team will call to schedule an appointment for an evaluation. If a child qualifies, an Individual Family Service Plan (IFSP) is written, and services can begin.

Brief Explanation

As a parent, you're vital in your child's development, especially through Early Intervention (EI) services. EI providers work with you to help your child grow by using everyday activities in your home to build essential skills. Here's a breakdown of what to expect:

  • EI Providers as Coaches: They guide you in teaching your child, offering strategies to support learning during daily routines.

  • Meaningful Routines: You’ll choose familiar routines for your child to practice new skills in a comfortable setting.

  • Natural Environment Learning: Skills are taught using everyday objects and activities rather than special toys.

  • Active Participation: Your involvement in daily routines helps your child learn and develop throughout the day.

Skills Important for Language Development

  • Eye Contact/Joint Attention: Crucial for communication and shared focus.

  • Attention: Helps children stay with a task long enough to learn about it.

  • Sounds: Early babbling and sound play encourage vocal development.

  • Facial Expressions & Gestures: Nonverbal cues are an important part of communication.

  • Imitation: Children first imitate actions, then sounds, then words.

  • Turn-taking: Essential for back-and-forth communication.

  • Cause & Effect: Helps children understand how their actions impact the world.

  • Pretend Play: Encourages symbolic thinking and language development.

  • Response to Words/Directions: Understanding words and gestures is a key foundation for speech.
